If I Die Today Confront the "First Day" Of Grief (Music Video Premiere)

On their upcoming album The Abyss in Silence, Italian post-hardcore/sludge rockers If I Die Today face the process of loss and grief in its entirety. From life to death to acceptance by those who remain, the band’s seething, intense approach to sludge and post-metal captures the broad range of suffering that’s involved, though delicate hints of eventual peace flit through the record’s powerful riffs and rare gentler passages. Sludge’s caustic touch is entirely appropriate for this topic, but the clever touches of beauty and grace that filter through the overt aggression impart just how seriously the band takes their subject matter. We’re premiering the video for “First Day (Denial)” below.

“First Day” is a short, aggressive track that immediately throws all of If I Die Today’s musical might at the listener and offers no quarter. Lyrics discard consistency for urgency, jamming devastated screams into every nook and cranny that the hurried pace allows for. The second half of the song applies more of the band’s knack for tension-escalating hardcore, wedging in a brutal stop-start sort of riff as the song comes to a wrenching halt. The whirlwind structure and disjointed music video outline a painful truth: it’s just hard to exist on that first day after experiencing loss, where the very concepts of routine and normalcy seem like obscene, disgusting totems to everything that can no longer be.

The band comments:

“First Day (Denial)” is a song about suffering and regret, it is the first song in the album where we begin to face the stages of mourning, the whole concept behind “The Abyss In Silence”. It is a direct song that reveals the mood of the whole record, full of remorse, anxiety coming from the awareness that the world will not longer be the same after losing a very important part of you. No other songs could have introduced better than this “The Abyss In Silence” and we sincerely hope that it will deliver the message as straight as possible.

The Abyss in Silence releases April 29th via Argonauta Records.
