Holy Poison: The Art of Mortuus (Funeral Mist, Marduk)

One of my most vivid memories of the past few years was Marduk’s show in Los Angeles. Beset by technical problems, the quartet still delivered one of the most vicious performances I’ve ever seen. The air was fraught with tension, only to dissipate in a literal shower of bad vibes. A fan tried to set a bible on fire, security pepper-sprayed the fan, and the pepper spray spread out, leading to a mass exodus of fans clutching their faces. (See story here.) It was a bummer, but it kind of made sense.

Recently I discovered that many of the shirts sold at the show (and perhaps some in your closet) were designed by Mortuus, vocalist for Marduk and Funeral Mist. (I love the expressive dimension he brings to Marduk – you can hear it below in “Phosphorous Redeemer”.) He runs a graphic design company called Holy Poison. Clients so far include Averse Sefira, Black Anvil, Horde of Hel, Merrimack, Ofermod, and, of course, Funeral Mist and Marduk. Mortuus’ style is big and strong, heavy on gothic fonts. (He did the layouts for Ofermod’s Tiamtü and Marduk’s Wormwood.) I’m not crazy about the huge prints and the text on the tails of shirts, but I guess that’s the fashion these days.

Mortuus is probably selective about his clients, but if you think he’d be a good fit for your project, his email address and portfolio are visible on Holy Poison’s page.
