Hirax in Japan

Hirax in Japan, Oct/Nov ’10

. . .

I’m the biggest Hirax fan I know. This isn’t saying much, since I’ve never met another Hirax fan. (Some guy did compliment me from afar once when I went running in my Hirax shirt.) After literally years of wondering why, I think I know the reason: Hirax never tour the US. I follow Hirax’ MySpace, and every so often I see an announcement about yet another tour in South America. That seems to be where their fans are (with a good-sized contingent in Germany – see the killer Thrash and Destroy DVD, filmed at the Keep It True festival.) One can’t blame Hirax for not touring the States – that’s a tough slog. But they’re from Long Beach, half an hour from where I live now. Would it kill them to play a local show? Or will I forever just nurse memories of seeing them play over five years ago?

In the meantime, I, lone Hirax fan, must content myself with videos like the one above. It’s of Hirax, once again playing in a country not theirs – ours – and having a blast. Then again, that country is Japan, and I’ve never heard of a metal band playing Japan and not having a blast. The video is just photos, really, and one can already guess what’s on it. But I’m a guy of simple pleasures. Seeing gaijin metalheads walk around Japan never gets old. That’s several layers of minority-ness right there. Seeing Asian people in full metal regalia never gets old. (Admit it, it’s not a common sight.) And seeing old Japanese dudes do metal karaoke (“Breaking the Law” in this case) – that’s priceless. I’m so happy for Hirax. They’re traveling the world and playing to fans who care about them. But it seems like I’ll have to travel the world, too, just to see them play. Will I meet some pretty girl Hirax fan somewhere? Will our dates be Hirax shows? Will we have a Hirax-themed wedding? Will Hirax play at our wedding?

I can only dream.
