Heiress-MadeWrong

Heiress - "Made Wrong" (Premiere)

I began living in Seattle nearly two years ago, and in that time I’ve seen vitriolic sludge outfit Heiress so many times that I sort-of forgot their new album Made Wrong hasn’t been released yet. This is yet another instance of having heard these songs enough times that hearing the album version is kind-of surreal for me.

They already play like veterans, which make sense, because they are, even if they don’t have a Metal Archives page. Readers will probably be most familiar with vocalist John Pettibone, who has screamed in many outfits, most notably melodic metalcore outfit Himsa. Heiress suits him better than such light fare. Made Wrong doesn’t offer any significant twist to the sludge-riff-hardcore-singer sound, but their appeal lies in the conviction with which they deliver the music, and Pettibone’s delivery has never been more ferocious.

Submitted as proof, I present the title tack, one of the more memorable cuts on the record which balances Pettibone’s roof-of-the-mouth screech with a blue note guitar lick. Those, like me, who can’t get enough of Converge’s ballads will find a lot to like here.
