Autumnal Black Metal and Häxenzijrkell's "Die Nachtseite" (Album Stream)

The weather is changing. Just in the past two days here in Chicago, the ambient temperature has dropped at least 20 degrees (that’s in Fahrenheit, mind you). As Autumn emerges here in the United States, so does a greater appreciation for grander, more atmospheric black metal. This isn’t to say I don’t feel these pangs throughout the rest of the year, but there is something truly magical about this transitional phase in the grander annual season. As the world goes into a deep slumber, bands like Häxenzijrkell find their strongest footing. Listen to an exclusive full-album stream of their upcoming full-length album Die Nachtseite below.

Häxenzijrkell’s sound exists in a transitional place, itself. Not explicitly frigid, but not bright, the deliberate and washed-out black metal found on Die Nachtseite is the sound of a gradual slumber — leaves die, animals hibernate, and the world slowly moves indoors toward artificial warmth. This is where Häxenzijrkell’s sound exists on the black metal spectrum: a place where warmth can be felt, but the listener remains buffeted by icy winds. This will remain on a pretty consistent rotation in my household, at least until winter finally tightens its frozen grip.

Die Nachtseite releases September 30th on Amor Fati Productions.
