Sweden’s death metal royalty have returned, and they’re coming in hot: Grand Cadaver, initially formed as a pandemic project, are poised to unleash their second full-length full of snarling, morbid death metal. Deities of Deathlike Sleep hammers home the group’s talent at crafting melody-laced brutality. With a packed roster of scene veterans including Mikael Stanne and Christian Jansson of Dark Tranquility and ex-Katatonia drummer Daniel Liljekvist, the record’s urgent, belligerent sound is refreshingly direct and balances their combined expertise with purely energetic songwriting. Classic ‘Swedeath’ riffs abound, though they lurk with a peculiar gloom: poignant guitar lines chime like distant bells, and Stanne’s vocals conjure thoughts of rotten banquets and bloody harvests. It’s gnarly stuff, but that about sets the scene for the rest of the record’s blood-soaked death metal.
