Gozer The Path Always Leads to the End

Within Gozer's Mystifying Post-Metal, "The Path Always Leads to the End" (Early EP Stream)

For some bands, consistency isn't about sounding the same sonically as much as is it creating the same mental imagery and evoking the same feelings. That's where the UK's Gozer lies, stoically committed to driving listeners to the edge of tears with their massive, lush post-metal. On their new EP The Path Always Leads to the End, the band experiments with more synthesizers and drone/noise textures, granting even more depth to their wide-open sound, but the dark tonality and walls of crushing heaviness that defined their last album An Endless Static are still very much in play. Gozer's skill at compression and release causes emotional osmosis, pulling buried pain to the surface. Stream the EP here before it drops Friday.

The Path Always Leads to the End isn't a complete shift, but instead an alternate lens into Gozer's slow-moving methodology that inevitably comes with resounding payoff. The synthesizers throughout the EP are much more defined and electronic-ish than I would have expected, but they add a layer of inhumanity to the record that fits well with its theme. The title is an interesting contrast from their last album, too -- going from something endless to a definite end. I take it as a matter of frame of reference: in the grand scheme of things, there will always be noise and turmoil, but individually everything ends, and that inevitability sets the stage for the EP's emotional missive.

Drummer TJ comments:

When we first decided to release this EP - it was originally only intended to be a noise track leading into 'Celestial River', but after writing 'Where the River Meets the Ocean' we realised 'The Path' could be slightly bigger in scope. While the core instruments, are more stripped back in what we're playing - we pushed more on the layering with synths and additional percussion. This meant not boxing ourselves into composing solely within the confines our practice room. We hope this EP shows what other strings we have to our bow.
