Nick Green’s article on invisible oranges in Decibel‘s May ’06 issue (Lacuna Coil cover, order here) is essential reading. That’s where this site got its name. But where did “invisible oranges” get its name? Why not “apples” or “bocce balls”? People have called it by other names for a while — “the claw,” “doom hands,” “black metal hands,” and so on. Gene Hoglan has this theory about the origin of the term.

[D]id you know that (at least in my opinion), Chuck [Schuldiner] from Death coined the term “Invisible Orange”? In early ’93, while remarking on a photo of Andy LaRocque for the “I.T.P.” [Individual Thought Patterns] session, Chuck showed me a pic of Andy doing “it,” and his comment was, “And here’s Andy, grasping the ‘invisible orange’…”, to which I started howling, ‘cuz I’d never heard that phrase before. And I’ve since used it to explain German metal for 16 yrs.

Gene also says, “It would be interesting if anyone can backdate it any further.” If anyone can, do share.
