Faceless Entity Fly the "Decaying Banners of Existence" (Track Debut + Tour With Lamp of Murmuur)

Mysterious Dutch band Faceless Entity‘s music isn’t so much black metal as it is a dreary fog, one which envelops the listener in lugubrious misery and slow, hypnotic buzzing. This duo (or are they still a trio?) — resources are limited and inconsistent at best, but Faceless Entity’s mysterious aura calls for such mystique and misinformation. I am reminded of the forum era, prior to Encyclopaedia Metallum’s overhaul which included the linking of related acts on individual artist pages–information was never truly even and consistent, rather speculation ruled the land (it still does, too–look at the desperate global attempt to figure out who Faceless Entity touring mate Lamp of Murmuur’s enigmatic M. is beneath the corpse paint).

As peculiar as the information which surrounds them, Faceless Entity’s haunted black metal oozes dejection in the same way it embraces the spiritual: beneath a harrowing haze. Nothing is ever made perfectly clear, rather the band maintains their charm over the listening audience through both subtlety and limited communication. Riffs and progressions can repeat ad nauseam, and yet upcoming album The Great Anguish of Rapture, Faceless Entity’s first release in five years, is a spiritually enthralling listen, enveloping the listener with a blackened aura.

At night, we lay down fatigued. As eyes shut, vision turns black. It is this exercise for dying which reveals the rot of death beneath life. To struggle against the jaws of death, we erect decaying banners of existence in a losing battle. Fear becomes suffocating, but sleep we must… The first presentation of Faceless Entity’s upcoming album, The Great Anguish of Rapture, recreates this image into audial form. Through ghostly Black Metal arrangements, “Decaying Banners of Existence” slowly sets a stage for anxieties to come, ever building in tension, to shortly rest and return with a vengeance.
