I seldom see any link between a metal band and jam rock (a genre of music I particularly despise), but lo and behold, here’s one. The Atomic Bitchwax work in the middle ground between amp-worshipping noise rock and the desert-fed stoner metal scene that produced Kyuss and Fu Manchu (the band shares two members with Monster Magnet, if that tells you anything), but the group’s also hosted a guest solo from Warren Haynes, founder of Gov’t Mule and former member of The Allman Brothers. In other words The Atomic Bitchwax put Dave Wyndorf within six degrees of separation of Wilson Pickett and I hope they’re proud of themselves.

In all seriousness, there’s no jamming on the band’s upcoming fifth album, Gravitron. Instead they offer a suite of tight and distorted rockers that rely on solid riffing to carry the day. I’d never listened to the band before the record, but pretty quickly decided A) that it’s better than anything Monster Magnet has done since “Space Lord” and B) that I want to investigate the band’s back catalog. “No Way Man,” is a prime example of why: pneumatic percussion and pure tube-amp distortion.
