Entry Level: Vitriol's Kyle Rasmussen Takes His Music Taste Six Feet Under

Entry Level is a new series where musicians re-examine the records that piqued their interests in heavy and loud music as children and young adults.

My first exposure to metal that reached beyond the extremes of thrash and early nu metal is as laughable as it was magical. I had just turned thirteen when I began living in a home where the internet was accessible. I hadn’t the first clue what to do with it, so I started out by typing “Metallica lyrics” into whatever search engine was standard at the time. I was quickly navigated to a website that would prove to be the beginning of my end, DarkLyrics.com. I was dizzied and delighted by page after page of provocative and heinous band names. I jotted down a few that really stood out to me and began to dive in.

I don’t recall what music sharing software I was using at the time, either Napster or Kazaa, but I kicked off my journey to new guttural heights by searching for Six Feet Under, a name that really cupped my beans at the time. I know that Six Feet Under is a band with a… mixed reputation, but the first time I heard Chris Barnes’ vocals was (hilariously) the biggest turning point in my life. It was a siren’s song! This was the OBVIOUS next step. To this day Maximum Violence holds a special place in my heart, and I think we can all agree that Haunted is a verified banger. I knew I wanted to scare my friends with death metal from that day forward. I’m proud to say I’m making good on that commitment! Thanks, Chris!

Kyle Rasmussen is the vocals and guitarist of black/death metal band Vitriol. To Bathe From The Throat Of Cowardice is out now on Century Media Records.
