Entierro - The Gates of Hell

Entierro Ventures Beyond "The Gates of Hell" (Video Premiere)

To me, Entierro feels like an impossibility achieved, or a wishful fever dream somehow come to reality. The Connecticut band merges Maryland-esque doom's main appeal, big riffs and ominous tidings, into an irresistible tide of burly heavy metal. While 'heavy/doom metal' certainly exists, it almost never sounds as coherent and cohesive as it does here, blending the subgenres as if decades of evolution hadn't separated them in the first place.

Put another way, it's moody heavy metal sharpened to a killing edge, with some star power in the mix too. Victor Arduini (ex-Fates Warning) [read our interview here] added his metal chops to the band earlier in their career (starting with Entierro) and helped shift their direction from more conventional stoner/doom metal to the sizzling, many-faced entity that they are now. While it's frankly disappointing how few other bands attempt what Entierro does, at least they're back with a new full-length album to stave off our hunger. The Gates of Hell takes up where their previous El Camazotz EP left off, though now the band has really honed in on exactly where in the heavy metal spectrum they want to exist, dialing up the melodic riffing while also building bigger and spookier atmospheres than before.

We're premiering the official lyric video for the title track here, which shows off some of that fascinating atmosphere as well as huge swaths of twin-guitar might. Check it out below:
