Dornenreich's Dark Metal is Fueled by Love (Early Track Premiere)

The last time we spoke with Dornenreich, the possibility of a new album was there, but far in the future. Now, two and half years later, that future possibility becomes an expressionistic reality. The long-running project of Austrian multi-instrumentalist Eviga, the once-black metal Dornenreich has gone through many twists and turns throughout its library of a discography. Drawing from the “dark metal” minimalism found on Durch den Traum and Hexenwind and the band’s more recent, but distant neofolk excursions like on In Luft geritzt and their most recent album, 2014’s Freiheit, upcoming album Du wilde Liebe sei‘s newly-dubbed “black arcane rock” exists in a temporal realm of folk and metal duality.

Based around the idea of “love” and how it affects the human experience, Eviga offers a brief explanation:

The concept of ‘love’ is often taken as the base, the justification, and the aim of our individual existence as well as our societies – and thus marks this world. To me it is vitally essential to explore all of its aspects, especially in these times of growing alienation.

As such, there is a tenderness found on this newest Dornenreich outing – the music isn’t overwhelming, rather comforting and familiar, even with Eviga’s signature, almost terrifying, heralding whisper. Eviga wants to express this love-concept in the most endearing way possible, and it isn’t through metal’s bombast, rather, Du wilde Liebe sei‘s delicate nature reveals Dornenreich’s hidden backbone; his love for his music and for the musical world fuels this project, not an admiration for evil or a reverence for nature.
