"Neceffe eft vivere": DDENT's Post-Metal Immerses Us in Nature's Power (Video Premiere)

The last time we heard from French post-metal group DDENT was with 2021’s Volemoi, an unusual single that was fairly unique if decidedly bleak: it depicted, in reverse, the story of a horrific sighting and the aftermath. The band’s industrial-tinged post-metal crafted a musical stage of cosmic-horror-tinged wonder and impending doom that perfectly matched the slowly unfolding dread of the music video accompanying the song (which I strongly suggest you watch). The band’s new project, the double-EP Ex Auditu, focuses on wonder and nature, allowing the band to apply their concrete-housed soundscapes on the complex topic of the natural world and our place in it. It’s a significant change in direction, but as the video for “Neceffe eft vivere,” which we’re premiering below, shows, the band’s sound nails the combination of amazement, poignancy, and scale the subject matter demands.

Shot in 1:1 and featuring images of life–in many forms–overlaid with strange black and white images, the song unfolds like a bombastic hymn. Powerful synthesizers and reverberating guitar create an airy, majestic atmosphere that’s laced with a little bit of grit from the rhythm section. DDENT injects a growing sense of regret, or maybe loss, into the song as it progresses, although every following chord seems to reframe that negativity as a possibility for something better. That seems to be the idea behind the song and video, too: this is life, as it is, not good or bad. DDENT passes no judgment, but merely observes that life is something to appreciate.

Ex Auditu will be released early 2023 on Chien Noir. Each chapter of the EP will be released digitally first, then both will be issued as one 2xEP record on CD, cassette tape and vinyl.
