Caged Unleash “From Roving About The Earth” (Full Album Stream)

Caged are unveiling their full length, From Roving About The Earth, on September 29 via Translation Loss Records. You can hear the unrelenting sludge onslaught with us first.

The Philadelphia-based band are one of those rare acts that truly channel the dystopian, post-doom vibes of the East Coast. The grooves are torturously heavy; the vocals sound anguished, and the noise elements underscore the whole thing perfectly.

Possibly the most commendable thing about Caged is that they succeed at blending unlikely elements. Though they are heavy and dark, they aren’t afraid of moments of lightness or melody, and somehow those never feel out of place alongside the harsh noise and chaos.

“Musically, I feel we started to really come into our own as a unit with From Roving About the Earth,” says vocalist John Jones. “With our EP Stricken by Continuance, some of those songs were remnants of songs from Ryan [Manly, guitar] and [my] old band, Black Urn, where those tracks were too dark/slow for that band at the time.

“With our debut album, we got to dive into our original ideas and visions further—doom, death, and experimenting. Challenging ourselves while being in the pocket with our process. This is also the first release where our noise guy Joe was with the band from the ground up of the writing process of the album, whereas with the EP he joined the band and contributed once that record was tracked.”

“He was with us side-by-side while we were writing, matching our ideas with samples and noise from places not normally pulled from with instruments not typically used for doom bands. And with our guitarist, Ryan, who writes the bulk of the material, he really dove into his role as tone-scientist, laying the groundwork for our debut.”

If you’re lucky enough to live in the Philly area, you can check out Caged in support of this new record at their release show, October 27, 2023 at Bar 2300. Get the album here.
