Blitzkrieg - Buried Alive / Blitzkrieg 7"

. . .

One of my favorite covers by Metallica is Blitzkrieg’s “Blitzkrieg”. It appeared on the Creeping Death EP and as a bonus track on Kill ‘Em All. I’ve heard and loved this cover for over two decades. Only recently did I seek out its original. I can be quite slow.

According to metal-archives.com, Blitzkrieg’s “Buried Alive”/”Blitzkrieg” 7″ came out 30 years ago today. It’s pretty much all I know about Blitzkrieg. Evidently they’ve had a career since, going through 14 guitarists, 10 bassists, 11 drummers, and seven albums, and they’re still active. Is Blitzkrieg’s catalogue worth exploring? My guess is that they suffer from the same fate as Diamond Head – people only want to hear the songs Metallica covered.

These tunes make me want to hear more. “Blitzkrieg” is, well, “Blitzkrieg”. And “Buried Alive”‘s vocals remind me of Dawnbringer’s Nucleus, my favorite metal record last year. I don’t know if the inspiration is direct, but I bet a spiritual connection exists that I should explore. The Neat Records era is a big gap in my knowledge, and seeing photos of those singles only fuels my curiosity. I love how lo-fi guitars sounded back then. You need only hear the wiry intro to “Blitzkrieg” to know that you’re in for quite a ride.
