Aztec Dispatch #2: The Fill-in-the-Blank Band, Primus

“I have always considered Primus an honorary metal band,” says Ted Nubel, editor at Invisible Oranges [Editor’s Note: Hey, that’s me!]. And he is right, given the band’s sonic power and drive. But Primus could be an honorary anything band. After 38 years of distortion, funk, speed, and weirdo first-person storytelling, they are still pushing limits.

Recently, Primus headlined the Hipnosis Festival in Mexico City for the last date of the Farewell to Kings tribute to their prog heroes, Rush. The show included some Primus favorites like, “Wynona’s Big Brown Beave,r” “My Name Is Mud,” “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver,” and, of course, “Tommy the Cat.” The pairing of their from-outer-space rhythms with one of prog’s most legendary bands shows the band’s refusal to be pigeonholed–because they dug the only hole of that type that exists.

While the influence of every famous band can be traced, there are some that are clearly derivative and very few that are not. Many famous bands might be a mix of a few different ingredients, while Primus is a stew of many. Perhaps “musical mutton” is a more appropriate phrase. One of the many ingredients of that slop is metal.

By way of example, their cover version of “Master of Puppets” by Metallica is not only powerful but perhaps an inevitability, as Les Claypool (founder) once auditioned for the metal gods but was rejected for being “too good.” In addition, Larry LaLonde (along with Kirk Hammet) both had the same guitar teacher, so the tribute seems appropriate and the cover speaks for itself.

For those who wonder, the heaviest Primus song is generally agreed to be “Professor Nutbutter.”

As another example of the band’s willingness to look beyond genres like funk or otherwise, consider the 2018 tour with Mastodon. The pairing itself for a 43-city tour (as opposed to a festival) shows Primus as a band that can fit with so many others that they will be vital for many years with many friends along the way.

Finally, the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the show South Park, featuring Primus and Ween, shows that the key to longevity might be collaboration, collaboration, collaboration. Would one guess that the band who counts among its fans some of the heaviest metal fanatics of all time also wrote the theme to the most irreverent show of the 20th Century?

In the end, it doesn’t really matter if something qualifies for one of the many subcategories of metal. Fans know the real deal when they see it, and Primus welcomes all manner of thrash to their shows. All metal fans should attend at least one.
