Ateiggär Makes Old Ways New on New EP

a0357640912_10

Black metal’s obsession with the “old ways” has resulted in something so stubbornly stale, you could throw a dart at a dartboard and land on one of ten primary influences, but beyond that, the source of influence overpowers any sort of artistic identity. This results in Encyclopaedia Metallum’s ten-thousandth Darkthrone clone or Burzum contemporary. Has it really become that easy? What if we took those old ways and made them new and exciting like Swiss black metal enigma Ateiggär? Listen to an exclusive stream of Us d’r Höll chunnt nume Zyt below.

Ateiggär’s influences are obvious (I won’t list them — that’s boring), but what makes them special is the individual personality and vigor they’ve injected into this EP’s second-wave black metal mysticism. Translating to “Initiator of Ideas,” Ateiggär’s music is rich with them, fueled by old ways but finding ways to translate them into a refreshing, youthful modernity. Although they wear their influences on their sleeves, this duo’s music has just enough personality to make it unique and step beyond the realm of pure worship. This is the old ways made new.

Us d’r Höll chunnt nume Zyt releases November 15th via Eisenwald. Preorder the cassette and/or LP editions here.
