Armory Mercurion

Armory Conduct a Daring "Wormhole Escape" (Early Track Stream)

There’s a sort of trope revolving around second albums that fans watch anxiously for—the dreaded sophomore slump. If that doesn’t strike surely the third one will suck, right? How many bands can keep up any level of quality year after year? When does it start to drop off?

For Swedish speedsters Armory, we’ll have to watch for album number four to see if they can keep it going, because their new third album Mercurion rules. As space-obsessed and velocity-driven as ever, these guys have no intention of stopping, and their blazing riffs and sometimes almost shocking musicianship (something certainly not guaranteed in this modern age of heavy metal) continue to refine an increasingly well-defined sound all their own.

The idea of space-focused metal with art to match inevitably draws to mind a bunch of esoteric technical bands: Voivod, Nocturnus, and Obliveon, among others from the classic scene, and more recently titans like Sacral Rage. Though Armory doesn’t necessarily sound like any of those, the legacy’s continuation is clear with their razor-sharp riffing and strange, infectious phrasing that’s all tied together by insanely catchy melodic vocal lines.

Today’s video and song premiere for new track “Wormhole Escape “ showcases the band at a restrained, grooving bounce, focused on hooky rhythms more than constant velocity (though there’s certainly some of that to it, too!). The video itself captures a manic look at what the band must be live: full of fire, energy, and true as steel!

The band comments:

A wormhole is a gateway to another point in space, a tunnel connecting two vastly distant regions of the cosmos. But passing through the wormhole is dangerous for both body and mind, as the crew of Mercurion are about to learn…

Mercurion releases April 22nd via Dying Victims Productions.
