A Flourishing Scourge - 'A Flourishing Scourge' (Album Premiere)

Seattle’s A Flourishing Scourge cover much ground on their forthcoming self-titled debut. The four members of the outfit each display a mastery of their instrument. Samus Paulicelli can blast and groove, guitarists Andrew Dennis and Tye Jones play in-sync in multiple subgenres, and bassist Kevin Carbrey knows when to lay back and when to fill space with unexpected runs.

The synchronicity the members share makes A Flourishing Scourge more interesting than the sounds they play with might suggest. The band traverses pretty much every territory contained within the umbrella of “progressive black and death metal”, but don’t uncover anything new. They follow in the footsteps of obvious and fairly ubiquitous influences.

That said, the band plays music at a level beyond their experience. According to metal archives, these young man have never played in another outfit, and have only honed their sound over the past four years. Paulicelli is a veteran member of Decrepit Birth and Abigail Williams among others, but he’s only a session musician. Already they can articulate melodies as well as much older bands. As ambitious as their debut is, it only hints at better music in store. For the time being, stream A Flourishing Scourge below.

A Flourishing Scourge’s self-titled is available independently on June 9th, order it here. Follow the band on Facebook.
