Year of the Cobra - "The Siege" (Video Premiere)

yearofthecobra

Two-piece metal bands aren’t as rare as they used to be, and just to prove how inconsequential the bare essentials (bass, guitar, drums) can be, some have surpassed their standard-sized peers. Mantar, The Austerity Program, Jucifer, Geryon, Inquisition: all critically lauded duos that more often than not go down just as heavy as anyone else. Year Of The Cobra is making a strong case to join these ranks on debut full-length In The Shadows Below, and the video for lead single “The Siege” reinforces that ‘less is more’ philosophy. A bare-bones warehouse set with both band members – Jon Barrysmith (drums) and Amy Tung Barrysmith (bass, vocals) – simply plugging away, Year Of The Cobra prove that you don’t need a big budget or big compositions to make big, epic metal. Amy’s vocals and “Rig Of Doom” recalls Amber Valentine of the aforementioned Jucifer, but is doubly impressive because she wrings power chords and melodies out of a 4-string Rickenbacker bass. She also has a seductive, intense presence that comes across even on screen; a huge advantage in a live setting, as the audience will for the most part be watching her. Jon’s drums are appropriately huge and cavernous, capable without being flashy: with two instruments, restraint can be as important as ability. ‘Heavy’ is a given when a band is comprised solely of low end, but with Billy Anderson behind the boards for In The Shadows Below, Year Of The Cobra have all the essential ingredients for a successful future.

In The Shadows Below will be available on October 28 via STB records. Order it here. Follow Year of the Cobra on Facebook.
