Wormrot - US tour diary, pt. 3

Live long and grind

. . .

One cool thing about tour diaries is that they help map out the underground. Bands help out other bands; some of your favorite bands, even ones seemingly unrelated, are friends with each other. That’s evident from Wormrot‘s previous two tour diaries (here and here). In this episode, guided by their van driver Mike Hill of Tombs (pictured above), they encounter Dave Witte (almost) and RJ Ober of Magrudergrind. Wormrot have two more shows on this tour supporting their album Abuse (see dates below). – C.L.

WORMROT – US TOUR DIARY 2010
PART 3

. . .

The gig in Tampa, Florida was OK, I guess. Not many things happened on that night. Crowd was good and supportive, as always. It was a tiring day for Wormrot and Phobia. Right after the show, all of us went to someone’s house to sleep. Good hospitality and great people. I had forgotten their names, though. Sorry about that.

A lot of people told me Miami grind scene is not really that great. Actually, that’s one of the shows that we’ll never forget. People were stage diving while all the bands performed. Arif being pushed by the crazy grinders who seriously planned to get bruised and might be hospitalized. No stopping, just grinding madness!!! Churchill’s has the most outrageous and angry crowd ever!! Yeah guys, just let it out and have some fun!!

Gig in Gainesville, Florida was also quite good. No severe moshing, but still supportive of every bands that played that night.

The festival in Atlanta, Georgia wasn’t really like a festival. It wasn’t a full house, but crowd was crazy!! Moshing, some people broke their glasses, and some too drunk to fucking care they had come for the festival. All went well, and everyone was happy. It was supposed to be our last show with Phobia, but coincidentally, Phobia would be playing with us in Lexington, Kentucky. Awesome!!! But it was our last show with Maruta. Gonna miss those boys!! We had fun chilling together, even though it was only 3 days.

Today, the drive to Chattanooga, Tennessee is only 2 hours. Checked out of our hotel room and went to Denny’s for breakfast, then to Target and chilling at Starbucks… Oh yeah… 1st time we really had a lot of time to waste and walk around for some small shopping.

Touring is always tiring but satisfying!

The gig in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Lexington, Kentucky was not too bad. The gig in Lexington was also the final show with Phobia. It had been a fun tour with them. We had so much fun together sharing hotel room to save money (I’m serious, guys… 10 in a room) and just chilling. After the drives & shows, we really don’t want to party. We appreciate peace and quietness before finally retiring to bed. Call us lame, but seriously, guys… We need a lot of rest during the tour. Most of the bands we know that tour do not really party after their shows. It’s tiring enough to be in the van for hours, and you had to load in, wait for your turn to perform & load everything back into the van, which normally is around 1 – 3am every single day. There’s a time to party, but when you are touring, you really need to discipline yourself, coz every day you face a new challenge, so you must be mentally and physically prepared to face any obstacles.

Anyway, the next show was in Raleigh, North Carolina. The place was too big for the number of turnouts. Being a new band, we really don’t fancy big places unless it’s a festival. But the show was alright. Bands like Priapus & Man Will Destroy Himself were really good that night. Oh yeah, the drive to Raleigh was the last long drive we had for the tour. Phew…

. . .

Dave Witte... almost

. . .

Next stop, Richmond, Virginia!!!

It was only 4 hours drive so we went to Mike’s friend’s house, which turned out to be Dave, Municipal Waste drummer!!!! What a fucking lucky day! Fit was like a small boy getting his toy, coz Dave is one of his favourite drummer. But sadly, Municipal Waste is on tour, so we didn’t get to meet Dave. His girlfriend Amy was at home, and she’s damn cool. A tattoo artist, for goodness’ sake! So if you’re in Richmond and you wanna get a tattoo, do drop by her shop, Amy Black tattoo studio. It’s near a Thai restaurant, Ginger. Fucking spicy Asian food – that’s, of course, the way we like it, babies!!!

The gig was fucking awesome. We had a lot of fun with the people who came down for the show and also the bands that played that night. Short Bus Pile Up and Grown Ass Man were freaking tight. Great lineup! When Wormrot played, people moshed, danced, and there was one guy who slid on the floor that was wet with spilled beer like he scored a goal!!! For he’s a jolly good fellow! I’m surprised people still came to the show coz it was raining since morning. We really appreciate it, guys!! We had an early night coz it was the kind of weather that makes you sleepy for no reason. ZZzzzz…

. . .

Wormrot with RJ of Magrudergrind

. . .

The next show at Silver Spring, Maryland was in somebody’s basement. And damn the weather, for it was still raining!! Not cool, man… But what made our day was the crowd being so awesome, moshing and dancing on the wet floor under a messy punk’s basement. It was a rainy day special! And what made us mighty happy was when we bumped into RJ from Magrudergrind at the gig!! We didn’t have a place to stay, so he offered to put us up at his place. It has been 3 years since we last saw Magrudergrind when they performed in Singapore back in 2007. It’s a small world after all…

The next morning, RJ made some Grindcore breakfast for us… It’s Grindcore coz he cooked eggs and potatoes damn fast!! After breakfast, all of us left for our next show in Delaware, Wilmington and RJ went to the airport for Magrudergrind Europe Tour. SUH-WEET!!!!
