Wake - 'Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow' (Album Premiere)

Wake is pissed. Granted, most grindcore bands are angry, but Wake’s music spits, stomps, and bucks with an unbridled, animalistic ferocity. Never ones to truly conform to grindcore’s rigid sound demands, Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow shows this Alberta-based unit shattering the mold and haphazardly reconstructing it.

On the surface Sowing the Seeds seems like a standard grindcore album, but Wake unfurls their wings in a flurry and the album is peppered with nuanced, head-tilting oddity. While “Low” becomes a smokescreen of raging, melodic psychedelia, “Wretched Tongues” shows the band flexing an ephemeral heavy drone muscle. Wake’s schizophrenic, avant garde take on grindcore is a strong step in the right direction, a speedy grindcore answer to the question posed by bands like Suffering Luna and Gasp so many years ago.

Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow will see a February 26th release on vinyl, cassette, and CD via Sentient Ruin Laboratories, Nerve Altar (who also released that amazing Column of Heaven/Suffering Luna split), 7 Degrees Records, and EveryDayHate.
