A Dramatic Closer: Verwoed’s “Verder Van Het Licht”

Netherlands-based one-man black metal outfit Verwoed set the stage for their upcoming debut full-length back in 2016 with their Bodemloos EP. While the pithy outline provided by those three songs will expand into De Val, out later this month, relistening to them in the context of the new album is a reminder of the value and importance of EPs, especially when it comes to sole-practitioner projects like this. While very much “testing grounds” for ideas, projects can find quick success if and when they nail a distinctive sound — as far as De Val goes, “distinctive” is definitely the right word. Check out an exclusive stream of the upcoming debut’s closing track “Verder Van Het Licht.”

Featuring clean singing, an opus-grade atmosphere, and one steady ascent toward harrowing climax, listening to “Verder Van Het Licht” alone might actually lead you to believe that the first four tracks of De Val carry on in much the same fashion. The other songs on the album definitely rip harder and faster, but they do not function as well in coherence without “Verder Van Het Licht” to act as a grand summation of all that has been said. De Val, despite its fury, has a subtle abstract noiselessness to it, something which the clean vocals especially help bring to the forefront. A compelling release indeed, if a little short, but one for any time you need a quick hit of black metal to send you spiraling into the night.

De Val releases May 24th via Sentient Ruin (US vinyl), Tartarus Records (EU cassette), and Argento Records (EU vinyl).

A note from project mastermind Erik B. regarding the new single:

A hymn about the never-ending and exhausting search for truth in Life and Death; determinedly steering away from all that we hold close to our hearts. Our dear friend Ryanne van Dorst from Dool is doing guest vocals on this song.
