Experimenting with Death: Veilburner's "Panoramic Phantoms"

veilburner

Indomitable: if there’s one word that can summarize the experience that is Veilburner, it’s this. The US-based duo are fearless in the pursuit of their craft, tearing components from a baffling swath of influences with zero regard for convention, tradition or expectation. On their upcoming full-length A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy, their fourth since 2014, the prolific team of multi-instrumentalist Mephisto Deleterio and vocalist/visual artist Chrisom Infernium tear through a multitude of stylistic elements with dexterity aplenty. We’ve got the album’s second track “Panoramic Phantoms” premiering below.

Veilburner have cultivated a reputation for themselves in no small part due to their trailblazing unpredictability, and this is no less true with their latest effort. Often, it’s only the band’s inclination towards capriciousness that links one track with the next — that and the skillful performances laid down by both members. Deleterio’s ever-nimble fingers tumble through beefy chugs, tremolo breakaways, and warped solos rendered with equal parts tastefulness and flair. Meanwhile, Infernium manipulates his voice both naturally as well as with an array of gonzo effects for a dazzling range of textures. “Panoramic Phantoms” also features Deleterio’s buttery-smooth cleans toward the end.

The result of all this stitched-together chaos is a gradual fracturing of the listener’s sanity, a creeping Lovecraftian madness that slowly envelops the consciousness as opposed to an instantaneous shattering of reality. Chrisom Infernium’s warped chants are the gurglings of an ageless, extraplanar evil, maw agape, sucking down the remnants of one’s mind to sate its unfathomable hunger. The deeper one plunges into Vielburner’s arcane mysteries, so do the earthly tethers loosen, eventually severing all links back to concrete existence.

Veilburner will release A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy via Transcending Obscurity Records on December 28th. Pre-orders are live on Bandcamp, where you can stream two other songs from the record as well.
