Upcoming Metal Releases: November 3 - 9, 2013

Metal’s momentous year is still on the move, despite seemingly emptying its chambers during last week’s deluge. November, if this span of seven days is any indication, will continue balancing the tried and true with the shiny and new. The folksy Falkenbach‘s longboat is back in the dock, while the Melvins are the Melvins; just more (perhaps less?) Melvinier. Elsewhere, Germ and Zemial graft new pieces onto old templates, while Nocturno Culto revels in the cult cardboard causing his vinyl shelves to bow.

Of Note is particularly ripe for the picking, counting Cara Neir‘s clever post-black crash and Enabler‘s crushing crust among its blossoms. If death is your desire, Cathexis, Convulse, and Sordid Flesh all find the sweet spot via different angles. And, if weird is the way you want to go, there’s plenty of progression (and possible irritation) present. Appalachian Winter and OvO‘s goal is to challenge, albeit in ways that measure differently on the intentional-agitation-creation scale.

See something we missed? Goofs? Let us know in the comments. Plus, as always, feel free to post your own shopping lists. Happy digging.

New metal releases for the week of 11/03/2013 – 11/09/2013. Release dates are formatted according to proposed North American scheduling, if available. Expect to see the bulk of these records on shelves or distros on Tuesday unless otherwise noted. Blurbs and designations are based on available promotional material and perceived buzz.

Anticipated Releases:

Falkenbach – Asa | Prophecy Productions | Viking metal, folk metal
Long-running German solo act pens gorgeous and textural-rich settings for mythological tales.

Germ – Grief | Eisenwald | Black metal
Tim Yatras (Australia’s Austere) screws with the depressive black metal formula, filtering harrowing howls through various genre gates such as post-punk.

Nocturno Culto’s Gift Of Gods – Receive | Peaceville Records | Heavy metal
Trad with the blackened tang of the author’s other ventures (Darkthrone, Sarke). Nocturno turns in five tracks including a Universe cover.

Melvins – Tres Cabrones | Ipecac Recordings | Melvins
In their 30th year of existence, Melvins reach back to the past, grab Mangled drummer Matt Dillard, and shift Dale Crover to bass. Stream the full album here.

Zemial – Nykta | Hells Headbangers | Black metal
Greece’s Archon Vorskaath (Agatus) makes classic forms congeal underneath a blackened banner with a beguiling bass tone leading the way.

Of Note:

Amiensus / Oak PantheonGathering | Tridroid Records | Black metal
Two up-and-coming, folk-inflected USBMers share this split. Check out their prior work here and here.

Cara Neir – Portals To A Better, Dead World | Broken Limbs Recordings / Halo of Flies Records | Black metal
USBM with a strong punk streak, though not in the way you’d expect.

Cathexis – Pillar of Waste | Mulligore Production | Death metal
These Austinites reawaken a style of tech death which will certainly find a groove with fans of Visceral Bleeding.

Convulse – Evil Prevails | Svart Records | Death metal
Long-dormant Finnish OSDM crawlers follow-up their January comeback single with a full helping.

Czar – No One Is Alone If No One Is Alive | Cracknation | Industrial, prog metal
Members of Acumen Nation till the middle-ground between Neck and Prong.

Draumar / Appalachian WinterBerglieder | Nine Gates Records | Symphonic black metal
Germany’s Draumar offer orchestral washes while Appalachian Winter continue to flesh out their uniquely American take on black metal bombast. Samples of past work can be found here and here.

Enabler – Flies | The Compound | Metallic hardcore, punk
For their second EP of 2013, Milwaukee’s Enabler grinds through more crusty, Cursed core. Includes a Sepultura cover.

Eritherium – Loss | Self-released | Progressive death metal
Opeth-ian depression from Melbourne.

Finnr’s Cane – A Portrait Painted By The Sun | Prophecy Productions | Black metal
Cloaked in an atmospheric mist, these Canadians expand upon the post-black palette with woodsy timbres.

Kaosophia – The Origins of Extinction | Bloodred Distribution | Black metal
Stout blasts and occult trems come from this Ukrainian quartet.

Nami – The Eternal Light of the Unconscious Mind | Year of the Sun Records | Progressive death metal
The Andorran experimental collective should win over fans of Gojira‘s rubber-suited, stomping riffs. Includes a guest spot from Loďc Rossetti of The Ocean which is a fine point of reference as well.

Old Skin – Maere | Church of Fuck / Dry Cough / Skin & Bones | Blackened metallic hardcore
Corpse-painted metalcore coughs up a hairball. Nasty.

Otargos – Apex Terror | Listenable Records | Black metal
Industrial-tinged blasts from France. Despises gods, loves quantum physics. Like a Richard Dawkins OK Cupid profile.

Ovo – Abisso | Supernatural Cat | Avant-garde
Experimental clatter that messes with noise and the driving rhythms of Zu.

Rising – Abominor | Indisciplinarian | Sludge
Deathly Danish grooves reminiscent of a less gory Pungent Stench.

Sordid Flesh – Torturer | Vic Records | Blackened death metal
The Swedish quintet with a notable resume (Sorcery, live member of Kongh) defies expectations by blackening up their OSDM and giving all of it a punk production.

Soul Remnants – Black and Blood | Horror Pain Gore Death Productions | Death metal
Littleton, MA busy-bodies (Burial, ex-The Year of Our Lord) does right by Floridian USDM while upping the anthemic quality with a subtle push of power.

Southern Whiskey Rebellion – Acquisition of Perception | Self-released | Stoner metal
These NO gents are baked in the same pit as a peppier Crowbar.
