Hey again, Andrew here. Jon is just now getting back from vacation, so he’ll be up-and-running here in a jiffy!
Here are the new metal releases for the weeks of September 9 – September 15, 2018. Release dates are formatted according to proposed North American scheduling, if available. Expect to see the bulk of these records on shelves or distros on the coming Fridays unless otherwise noted or if labels and artists get impatient. Blurbs and designations are based on whether or not I have a lot to say about it.

Abhorrence – Megalohydrothalassophobic | Svart | Death Metal | Finland
The Finnish quintet are back after many years of silence with death metal goodness from across the pond. Expect riffs upon riffs in the old school vein, with some moden stompiness thrown in for good measure. This is only an EP, and the band doesn’t exactly have a trove of material available, making this release all the more special.
Irreversible Mechanism – Immersion | Blood Music | Technical Death Metal | Belarus
Get ready for probably the strongest (and most left-field) of all the tech-death releases this year. With a decidedly progressive twist, this band took three steps forward and zero steps backward with their sophomore full-length. Their debut Infinite Fields from 2015 was much more traditional in the tech-death arena; what they’ve learned since then, apparently, has been both grand and grandiose.

Conan – Exisential Void Guardian | Napalm | Doom | United Kingdom
You should already know what you’re getting into with Conan: “Caveman Battle Doom.” The stoner element rings true through Conan’s latest music, but isn’t a centerpiece per se. Rather, it’s, fuzzed-out riffs which bludgeon rather than soothe. The headspace is mindlessly aggressive, but you’ll feel as fine as wine listening to it.
Emma Ruth Rundle – On Dark Horses | Sargent House | Ambient/Folk | United States

OTHER RELEASES
Infernal Coil – Within a World Forgotten | Profound Lore | Death Metal | United States
I had the chance to see Infernal Coil live, and the result was… noisy. There’s cohesive, layered noise, then there’s pure cacophony (which can be good as well), then there’s somewhere in between where neither approach really works. That said, maybe we can chock it up to the shoddy sound system at the venue, but these tracks are much more amenable to the recorded format.
Low – Double Negative | Subpop Records | Low | United States
Low is one of Jon’s favorite bands, and while my appreciation doesn’t span that far, I will say I was quite impressed by the small-audience live set I saw of theirs a few years back. This new album also impressed me. This is a prime example of a non-metal band capturing the metal ethos nearly perfectly.
