Trap Them – “Revival Spines” (Song Premiere)

Crown Feral

Trap Them will outlive the cliches they helped create. At the band’s inception, few bands from a hardcore background incorporated the Boss HM-2 pedal in such a prominent way. Along with Black Breath, they emulated the Swedish buzzsaw sound of, say, Dismember without actually becoming a death metal band. By the time they released Darker Handcraft in 2011, hardcore bands playing the Swedish sound had emerged like mushrooms after rain.

My perception is limited, but the lawn seems dryer now, and after their last record, Blissfucker, failed to hold my interest, Trap Them are returning to form with Crown Feral. This upcoming album corrects some of its predecessor’s shortcomings by returning to more brief and hard-hitting songs, such as “Revival Spines.”

Hardcore bands playing lean and mean is nothing new, and neither does “Revival Spines” contain any real curveballs. But the old hardcore playbook has not lost its effectiveness. the mid-tempo breakdown that composes the last half of the song inspires bodily motion and violent thoughts, which is, of course, the point.
