harbingers of hatred

Taggarik - "Harbingers of Hatred" (EP Premiere)

harbingers of hatred

Though its title alludes to a darker, emotive nature (which is true for Taggarik‘s incendiary lyrical content), the Harbingers of Hatred EP heralds a more frigid, introspective type of terror. It blisters through three songs with an obscuring musical approach, blanketing the listener’s vantage point with a howling haze. Embroiled in the classic, subtle melodicism found in the impetus of black metal’s second wave, Taggarik’s riff-centric, horrific hubris inverts crucifixes of ice with an historic might.

Illusory, the elusive instrumental mastermind behind Taggarik, has a solid, knowledgeable grasp on the tenets of what could be referred to as “Northern” black metal. Much like the legendary approach taken by bands like Paysage d’Hiver, Immortal (on their first few records), and Dissection, this multi-instrumentalist crafts sounds which are inexorably cold. Even without the EP’s definitive, blustery haze, there is a crystalline sort of stasis which defines the very core of “wintry” music, and being cold without shelter can certainly be terrifying.

Yes, the band verbally defines their music as a vehicle for hatred, but the Harbingers of Hatred EP’s ardor is overwhelmed by its frosty nature. For someone without air conditioning (me), Taggarik proves that even the respite of cold winds can leave lasting, icy burns. Let the Harbingers of Hatred EP (which is Taggarik’s first, by the way) enfold you with its dense frost below.

The Harbingers of Hatred EP is out Friday, August 4th, on Eternal Death.
