Stream Roundup: Cold Black Metal Edition

Nasheim – “Att av ödets trådar väva sorg”

Nasheim‘s debut full-length, Solens Vemod, is part of the stupidly loaded forthcoming (2/14) Northern Silence update, along with Ered Wethrin and Woods of Desolation, and it’s an album that shouldn’t be missed. Nasheim’s the product of one Erik Grahn, a Swede who has been churning out material under the Nasheim name since 2003. Nasheim’s been quiet since 2007, and “Att av ödets trådar väva sorg” off of Solens vemod is a great way to get to know the one-man band. (Here’s another.) This is Nasheim at its most polished and, perhaps, epic. The song’s a shining example of rich, soaring ambient black metal, and it’s loaded with memorable melodies and enough force to appeal to those who appreciate some oomph in their black metal. The last 3:30 of “Att av ödets trådar väva sorg” is a frontrunner for outro of the year.

Vilcakis – “Blood Dream in the Fever of War”

Vilcakis is a new one-man project from Fell Voices, Ruin Lust and Vorde‘s Michael Rekevics, the seemingly indefatigable drummer whose talents clearly aren’t limited to one instrument. With Vorde, Rekevics, as his résumé suggests, sticks to raw and violent black metal with a furious metronomic beat. “Blood Dream in the Fever of War”, an ominous lo-fi bruiser, is the only song streaming from the now-sold out Fever of War, but look for more material and a possible vinyl treatment in the future on Psychic Violence. For NYC people, Vilcakis will be playing the stacked Martyrdoom Fest this spring — presumably with some stand-in musicians.

Sanctuaire – “Gardien du Nord”

Quebec’s seemingly endless well of incredible black metal keeps on giving, and Sanctuaire is the newest project from the prolific Monarque, whose eponymous band is one of Quebec’s finest. “Gardien du Nord” is the second track to be released from a forthcoming debut, and unlike the first, an ambient soundscape, “Gardien du Nord” is an ugly but catchy lo-fi ripper. Sanctuaire’s debut will be available from Les Productions Hérétiques around the beginning of spring.
