Stream: Gigan – “Electro-Stimulated Hallucinatory Response”

Most technical death metal — the good stuff, anyway — is stern and serious. Not so much with Gigan. We’re talking about a band who announced their previous record by declaring that “THE SPACE DRONES HAVE LANDED,” and who named their new album Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery and Super Science. So yeah, they’re a little goofy.

And they’re more than a little weird. I’m about ready to use my powers of music-writer hyperbole to start calling 2013 the Year of Weird Death Metal, and Gigan might be the most outlandish of the bunch. “Electro-Stimulated Hallucinatory Response” dumps a sack of overcaffeinated bees into your ears: all effects-washed zigzags and jitters that only occasionally cohere into a semblance of groove. New vocalist Eston Browne gets the Gigan treatment; his voice seethes with digital granulation.

Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery and Super Science drops on October 15. Drop acid and listen to it while watching Pacific Rim.
