Song Premieres: Birdflesh & Organ Dealer

Unlike most other styles of metal, Grindcore’s basic song delivery format is short, incidental releases. Few grind bands adhere to the studio album format. Think of it this way: for a thrash band, a full-length studio album is the $20 bill. It covers most normal bases. In grind a studio album is more like a $100 bill. You can use it to pay for a night out, but doing so seems excessive. In grind a split is more like a $10 bill, slight, but still capable of obtaining something essential. which makes a split album something like a $50 dollar bill, something which could go toward a lasting purchase or frivolity equally.

Grind bands frequently use splits to deliver not only essential songs, but also to build lineages and endorse peers. Case in point, long-running comedic grind outfit Birdflesh are about to release a split with Organ Dealer a band that Birdflesh influenced. We have two songs from that split to sample for you.

As far as grind goes, Birdflesh write unusually coherent songs. Their relative clarity lets their humor come across. “Insane Inventor” is very easy to parse apart, and while it probably won’t become as iconic as a song like “More Garlic”, it’s still grade-A Birdlfesh.

“Exasperated” in contrast hits a little harder. It’s stuttering intro and abrupt end are more stereotypically grind, but the band unloads mosh riffs effectively in-between.

Both bands will perform their songs at the upcoming Maryland Deathfest next week. The split album will be available on June 2 via Horror Pain Gore Death and can be ordered here. Follow Birdflesh and Organ Dealer on Facebook.
