Sink - "Enchant" (Song Premiere)

Sink have never been ones for genre boundaries. With a discography based in the entrancing fusion of kosmiche synth drone, black metal, and soundtrack inspired art music, Sink never really retained a core sound, instead shifting their collective weight between different elements from song to song. This amorphous sense of identity did make working through these Finns’ discography to be a bit of a chore, sure, but each new manifestation of whatever Sink chose to be was both hypnotic and memorable.

Of course, this time around, Sink has made quite the shift. Though historically a metal band, albeit in a more ephemeral sense, new effort Ark of Contempt and Anger shows Sink shedding all semblances of their previous source of volume and heft in favor of a surprising new sound. Though Sink still holds on to the ambiance and film soundtrack atmospheres of their previous works, this new ark carries a distinct air of world music and darkwave. Found at the center of this new album, “Enchant” is a special bed of activity nestled deep within a bed of subtle theatrics and tranquility. Following in the footsteps of Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell and the classic darkwave/world music fusion of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard’s Dead Can Dance, “Enchant”‘s mixture of organic psychedelia with tribal beats and exotic vocal melodies marks new territory for Sink. They may still be the same avant-garde misfits at heart, but, as the most intense peak of this album, Ark of Contempt and Anger is a definite shift in Sink’s direction, especially if they choose to continue, and I honestly hope they do. Such a subtle sound suits them.

The surprising left turn that is Ark of Contempt and Anger will be released on Svart Records this coming June 17 – you can pre-order it direct here. Scroll down for an exclusive first listen of “Enchant.”
