Serpentfyre - "Invocation of Phosphorous" (Track Premiere)

Given their moniker, Finland’s Serpentfyre sound almost exactly like one would expect them to – and frankly, that’s a good thing. Given the current proliferation of ‘hybrid of two sub-genres with elements of three other genres thrown in for good measure’ bands—many of whom make exhilarating music, don’t get me wrong—it’s more than a little refreshing to discuss a band’s style without having to awkwardly string together descriptors.

On their forthcoming EP Illuminating Ruin, Serpentfyre play black fucking metal, pure and simple, and hail Satanas do they play it well. On tracks like “Invocation of Phosphorous,” the band doesn’t skimp on the malevolent riffs, tempestuous drumming, or scornful vocals, and they infuse it all with an eerie melodicism that often borders on the catchy. To paraphrase a line from an old Grateful Dead song, Serpentfyre may be taking listeners to Hell in a bucket, but we’ll definitely enjoy the ride.

Illuminating Ruin will be available on limited edition vinyl in mid-July from Altare Productions. In the interim, check out our exclusive stream of “Invocation of Phosphorous” below.
