Santos - Pelican and Reptilian shirts

. . .

You may know Santos’ work. He did the covers for the latest Kylesa and Noisear records, and has designed shirts for High on Fire, Fight Amp, Lamb of God, and others. He’s tour managed and sold merch for Kylesa for some time, and I met him when the Metalliance tour came through. Santos is a good dude.

Earlier this year, his wife got hit by a car. It was a hit-and-run accident, and she’s been laid up for a few months recovering. Santos tells the story here. It sounds like she’s insured but dealing with the bullshit that comes with American health insurance: co-pays, deductibles, reimbursement. In the US, you can have health insurance and still pay out the nose.

So Santos designed two t-shirts to help offset his wife’s medical bills. Above is the awesome “Pelican” design (no relation to the band, I think). I bet Santos is referencing the great Japanese artist Hokusai. He also made a “Reptilian” design below that reminds me a little of Farron Loathing’s tentacularness. (I made that word up.) Both shirts are in limited editions of 50, but may be reprinted if demand is sufficient. Ordering information is here.

Look out in May for sticker packs featuring artwork by Santos, Mark McCormick, Casey McKinley, Brian Mercer, and Glyn Smyth. I suggest following Santos’ blog. He sheds light on his artwork, and his writing is easy to read. Plus, Santos is a good dude.
