Sanhedrin Draw “Blood From A Stone”

Dig into most underground music scenes, and disparate as they may appear on the surface, you’ll find commonalities. The big one is authenticity: nothing gets a music nerd’s britches in a bunch as much as a whiff of fakes and frauds – if you’re not fully “in,” it shows. Brooklyn power trio Sanhedrin are 100% in. Building on the epic metal promise of their 2017 debut A Funeral For The World, they now return with a more diverse musical palette (and even more earworm riffs) with The Poisoner.

While maybe too many metalheads are only now admitting they loved Dokken and Skid Row all along, Sanhedrin proudly wear that melodic-hook heart on their collective sleeve. You can hear that loving reverence on “Blood From A Stone,” the new album’s third track, streaming exclusively below.

While other tracks on The Poisoner explore new places, “Blood From A Stone” recalls mid-era Queensryche in both sound and subtle self-awareness; Sanhedrin knows they’re good, but it’s not going to their head. Guitarist Jeremy Sosville, switching gears from his gig in black metal powerhouse Black Anvil, is in full Guitar Hero mode here, ripping riffs and solos from the same skies where Vivian Campbell and Jake E. Lee found theirs. Erica Stoltz (ex-Amber Asylum) knows when to let her voice soar, but also (and just as importantly) when to show restraint; Colin Marston’s production work echoes the same sentiment, letting the band stake their claim with a dry, clean tone that shows the world exactly what they’re about.

The Poisoner tosses genre tags out the window, and Sanhedrin is better for it.

The Poisoner releases February 22nd via Cruz Del Sur Records.
