Ryan Lipynsky, guitar god

Ryan Lipynsky (Unearthly Trance, The Howling Wind, Thralldom) is one of metal’s most creative yet underappreciated guitarists. So when I reviewed The Howling Wind’s terrific new record, I called for readers to create fictional guitar magazine covers featuring Lipynsky. Here are the three results.

Above is the winner, by Joe Dillingham. If he were editor of Guitar World, the (guitar) world would be a better place. Tabs of songs by Slayer, At the Gates, Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Coffinworm??? Sign me up for a lifetime subscription!

Despite massive respect to Dimebag Darrell, however, I’m not sure if guitar magazines need any more tributes to him. Practically every guitar magazine issue now is a tribute to Dimebag. Bryan Wall touched upon this repetitiveness in his entry above. 3 AC/DC songs, an Ozzy Osbourne one, and a Metallica one? Sounds about right. Guitar magazines are still trotting out the same songs that they did when I was a kid. That’s not right. The innovation in the guitar world takes place outside its magazines.

Finally, red5standingby, whom I interviewed here, contributes an entry using MS Paint. He is quite the genius with MS Paint – you can see his MS Paint skills here and his general artistic skills here.
