Ramleh – “Never Returner” (Premiere)

ramleh (1)

Almost 20 years after departing from their “rock” mode, last seen on 1997’s Boeing, and six years out from their latest full length, (Valediction, 2009) English power electronics and noise rock legends Ramleh have regained a strong foothold in a hole which could only really fit pioneer Gary Mundy’s boot. Be it in their harshest, most unrelenting meditations on humanity’s filth, or the much more expansive, full-band psychedelia which characterized Ramleh’s later period, the common thread in Mundy’s vision across his ever changing sound palette has remained simple: atmosphere.

With Circular Time, Ramleh’s near two-hour krautrock-inspired expanse of a double album due out later this month on Crucial Blast Records, Mundy’s meditations on atmosphere are taken to their absolute extremes, with the epic 10-minute closer “Never Returner” acting as the album’s drugged-out apex. An unrelenting wall of psychedelic delirium, “Never Returner” is a thematic culmination of the vast sound array with which Ramleh has bombarded the listener for the past 95 minutes or so. The layered, effected-to-mush haze, The Fall-inspired post-punk minimalism, raw noise rock brutality, and wave upon wave of glorious, harsh, beautiful sound all masterfully jumbled together in a way which is both chaotic and soothing. I suppose it’s that dichotomy which always drew me to Ramleh, and I seem to have fallen right back down the rabbit hole.

The Circular Time 2CD is slated for a December 4 release on the eclectic Crucial Blast Records, followed by a very rare series of live performances on US soil.
