Premiere: Obliteration - "Goat Skull Crown"

I’ve been sleeping on death metal a bit lately. Too often, someone will bring to my attention something I wish I had been listening to since the get-go, something ugly that rips and reminds me why it was death metal that first drew me into this whole thing. Fall resolution—get my shit together.

In a month that’s already been loaded with great new music from bands old and new, add Obliteration‘s “Goat Skull Crown” from their forthcoming album Black Death Horizon near the top of the list. While there are black metal and thrash leanings, this is death metal—fast and unforgiving, urgent and panicked. Obliteration is from Kolbotn, Norway, originally home to Darkthrone, and they channel the same primal energy as the local legends. Listen to those frantic vocals barely keeping it together on top of the speed-freak near-chaos underneath. A fucked up choir bit intervenes, then it’s back to business.

Black Death Horizon, Obliteration’s third full-length, is out on Relapse Records on November 12 and is available for preorder.
