Gorguts

The fourth annual Hopscotch Music Festival went down this past weekend in Raleigh, NC. Curated in part by Pitchfork metal writer Grayson Currin, Hopscotch is a festival in the mold of SXSW or CMJ — it takes the form of individual, genre-focused shows scattered across 15 small venues. This format means that attendees were robbed of a bizarre and awesome opportunity to see Pig Destroyer share the stage with, say, Pere Ubu. But it also means that the metal folk didn’t have to sit through Majical Cloudz.

Speaking of Pig Destroyer, they played an extremely intimate show with Gorguts, Vattnet Viskar, and Sannhet on Friday night. The venue, Slim’s, supposedly has room for 150 people, but it looks like a shoebox:

The show was so intensely packed that our photographer had difficulty getting close enough to Pig Destroyer to get a shot off. Personally, I find that such intensely crowded shows make it hard to focus on the music. I have no doubt that many less-grouchy fans formed glorious memories that night, though.
