Phobocosm – “Ordeal” (Song Premiere)

Even though it’s only four songs long, Bringer of Drought, the upcoming album by Montreal’s Phobocosm leaves an impact. The band is going to tour next month with Mitochondrion leading up to and following both bands’ performances at this year’s Maryland Deathfest, which should tell something about how Phobocosm sounds. If not, here’s a list of adjectives: abstract, technical, atmospheric, dirge-like. As dry and filthy as this band sounds the black vs. death metal distinction has no bearing. Much of Bringer of Drought comes across as airy as well as arid. Song passages bleed into one another in obtuse ways on this album, which is what makes the scorched-earth groove of the second song, “Ordeal,” so effective in the context of the album as a whole. It sounds like what you’d play over a slow-motion film of the Hoover Dam collapsing. We can’t present it to you in context right now, the full album will be released by Dark Descent on May 13 (CD-only pre-order here), but the song can hold its own just fine on its lonesome.
