Owl Erects A Transparent Monument

German doom metal unit Owl had no idea just how much their third album and Temple of Torturous full-length debut Nights in Distortion would mean to them just months after it was recorded. Context and meaning can change at the drop of a hat. Death is unpredictable — a terrible end which everything meets — but loss will always follow suit. Listen to an exclusive premiere of “Transparent Monument” below.

“There are a lot of grievous memories connected to that album, ” says project mastermind and Zeitgeister Music figurehead Christian Kolf, “but foremost it’s about my friend René Marquis who died some months ago, who played bass on it.”

Owl couldn’t have known of the loss which loomed in their new album’s future, but suddenly the despondently goth-tinged death/doom metal takes on a more active role of mourning. Nearly pushing the album to a halt, Owl trudged forward in the wake of their band mate’s passing. This ethereal, twisting music, both heavy and atmospheric, unexpectedly embodies the sadness it was meant to represent in an active sense.

As it is with everything Kolf and/or Zeitgeister related, Owl transcends the bizarre through an atmospheric milieu — strange sounds and odd harmonies clash and meld into a monolithic presence. In this case, the band’s own loss builds itself into a monument of absence, a transparency whose existence exudes itself.

Nights in Distortion will be released September 7th on Temple of Torturous
