Officium Triste Reclaims the Throne on “Like a Flower in the Desert”

When it comes to the more melodic end of death-doom, there are a handful of bands whose names are heard more often. You have Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, and so on. It isn’t incorrect to hear these names more — the former revolutionized the style and the latter helped bring it into a more popular forefront — but there are those whose music deserves to be heard all the same, if not held in a similar regard. Founded in 1994, Dutch doom metal act Officium Triste is a prime example of such a phenomena. Returning with their sixth album The Death of Gaia, the band culminates 25 years of experience with a masterful hand. Listen to an exclusive premiere of “Like a Flower in the Desert” below.

The fusion of death/doom metal with gothic rock is not a new one, but, when done right, it doesn’t really matter how tired other examples of it might be. Officium Triste’s melodic, downtrodden death-doom is a shimmering light in a sea of mediocrity. With bright harmonies and soul-rending emotion, it is immediately obvious just how long this band has been at it. There is proficiency, and then there is mastery, and Officium Triste’s take on the genre holds them to a higher tier.

The Death of Gaia releases December 13th via Transcending Obscurity.
