Neurosis: Live at CBGB 1995

Neurosis – Live at CBGB 1995 (complete show)

. . .

Neurosis shows are a rarity now. The band plays when and where they want, choosing events like Roadburn or the Maryland Deathfest, or special stints at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Who can blame them? They spent years in Bay Area clubs, toured to the breaking point in the late ’90s, and finally decided to get off the road.

Neurosis should be cherished. Their music isn’t meant to be digested and quickly forgotten. It moves listeners in a visceral way, sparking our deepest fears and longings. That kind of power needs to be harnessed; it can’t be accessed every night. Anything they give us now is a bonus.

The footage above is special. It documents Neurosis in the crucial time when they put aside being a good hardcore band to become an amazing metal band. It also preserves a period when a band that largely shuns the road lived for the journey. Finally, it was shot at CBGB, the historic New York City punk club that was home to Blondie, The Ramones, and countless others that became global commodities.

Neurosis were just realizing their power. They opened with the tribal masterpiece “Through Silver In Blood”. Watch Scott Kelly stalk the stage like a feral cat and Steve Von Till scream with fury during “To Crawl Under One’s Skin”. Check out the backdrop of visuals, transforming from a primitive aspiration to an essential part of the Neurosis experience. This footage documents how a band became a legend.
