Miasmal @ Treasure Town

Story and photo by Carmelo Española

. . .

It is May again, which means that tours leading up to Maryland Death Fest and Chaos in Tejas are in full swing. These tours give audiences a taste of the madness to come at these festivals. One such tour is for Swedish death metal dudes Miasmal, who will play both festivals on their first ever US tour.

Socially Retarded and Sea of Shit kicked off the night with some of the fastest powerviolence that ever came out of Chicago’s grimy south side. Both bands possess strong Man Is The Bastard influences in terms of harsh noise, hyper-speed riffing, and short but sharp blastbeats while maintaining the 90’s aggression of Chicago hardcore legends MK-Ultra and Los Crudos. They played no more than 15 minutes each. If you blinked, you’d miss.

I hadn’t heard of Nazi Dust, so I did not know what to expect. This Tampa hardcore outfit was a pleasant surprise, bringing straightforward hardcore while keeping the rich death metal sound their hometown pioneered. After a short, sweet set, some crowd members called for an encore by their other manifestation, Volcanic Slut, named after the classic Sodom song. The members simply switched instruments, and pummeled the crowd with a death/thrash one-two punch.

Mammoth Grinder and Hatred Surge dropped off Miasmal’s tour. But The Impalers, who share members with both bands, and Mammoth Grinder are still confirmed to play Maryland Deathfest along with Miasmal. The Impalers brought a savage attack that resonated with the rage of d-beat legends Discharge and Anti Cimex. The rowdiness factor shot through the roof as the crowd erupted in good, friendly, at times violent tomfoolery.

Now amped up, the crowd was ready for Miasmal’s dirty death metal. Miasmal shares a member with Swedish crust veterans Martyrdöd, and punk energy was very evident during their set. They are from Gothenburg, but their sound was straight out of the subway tunnels of Stockholm. The moshing got gnarlier, the stench of cheap beer and sweaty balls got stronger, and everyone was caught up in the HM-2-powered frenzy. No frills, no triggers, no wankery – just filth and dedication to old-school death metal.
