Marrowfields - Metamorphoses Album Cover

Marrowfields Shifts Doom's Tides with "Metamorphoses"

As civilizations fall, their traditions and beliefs fade into myth. The fables and folklore they leave behind, however, are great subject material for artists for centuries to come. In the Western world, Greek mythology (and the can-I-copy-your-homework Roman pantheon as well) are generous wellsprings of curiosity-piquing subject matter. Marrowfields, an atmospheric doom metal group from Rhode Island, has delved into a host of fables on their upcoming debut album Metamorphoses — rather than laying out specific stories beat-by-beat, though, they’ve penned roomy and encompassing sagas that stand on their own. We’re streaming the title track now, which, as the name suggests, is host to a multitude of states of being:

The serenity instilled by the clean guitar and sparse drums that initiate “Metamorphoses” is soon disturbed by a sudden, dramatic flood of amplification that takes a host of forms. Transformation is the key here: epic doom flows into atmospheric black metal and sharp-angled riffs shift into thick, boggy progressions. Strong and boisterous vocals lay out the narrative of the song: men and beasts struggle, perish, and persist, never unchanged. If you’re a fan of mythology, you’ll likely pick up on some of the subject matter, but even without it the emotions and soundscapes that unfurl are unmistakable. Metamorphoses delves into many stories and destinies across its five tracks, the title track included, all of which combine to offer a riveting, sorrowful exploration of ancient and unusual fates.

Metamorphoses releases April 24th. Pre-order via Bandcamp.
The band said the following regarding “Metamorphoses”:

Transformation and the ability to explore realms that are foreign to us are cornerstone to the theme set in “Metamorphoses”. We wanted to paint a picture, and tell a story of another world with crushing soundscapes. The ability to let go of all things tangible, and really let yourself submerge into a harrowing journey is what this album and title track is ultimately about.
