Marijannah Tease New Album, Post Outrageously Dreamy Album Artwork

Stoner doom outfit Marijannah, the cadre of warlocks behind some of the most thunderous psych tones to ever emerge from the tropical haze of the South Pacific, have finally announced the impending arrival of their sophomore full-length Istanah. A stylistic enigma of sorts, Marijannah was formed in 2016 as collaboration between guitarist Rasyid Juraimi of Singaporean grindcore legends Wormrot and guitarist Nicholas Wong of pop-punk group The Caulfield Cult. With Wong transitioning to percussion duties for the new project, Marijannah’s material sees the two sharing vocal responsibilities evenly as they trade valiant, bellowing melodic lines that soar over vintage riffs and filth-soaked hooks, as evidenced on their impressive 2018 debut Till Marijannah.

Yesterday, the four-piece took to Instagram to reveal the title of the upcoming record along with its ethereally foreboding cover art, which features two animal-spirit shamans garbed in crimson robes floating before a Castlevania-style fortress that protrudes threateningly from an alien landscape. While Marijannah hasn’t yet offered any sonic teasers from their new album, this announcement follows the August release of the band’s latest single “Bloodsucker,” a groovy, upbeat sludge romp through the band’s signature acid-soaked stoner sound. With its especially ferocious crunch and sputtering fuzz breakdowns, the track is an undeniably positive omen for the sort of textures we might expect to hear on Istanah. We’re staying tuned for sure.

Istanah releases December 6th via Cursed Tongue Records.
