Attempting to Traverse Malsanctum's Funeral Doom

Tim “Haasiophis” Grieco is a monster. When he’s not performing with Revenge, Antediluvian, or Amphisbaena, he is busy creating visual nightmare art. The keyword for Grieco’s body of work is “impenetrable.” From recorded sound to ink on paper, the Haasiophis experience can be boiled down to an impasse, some horrifying entity blocking your path through sheer, monstrous existence. A new chapter in this master’s oeuvre, the “ambient funeral doom metal” of Malsanctum offers a new communication of the signature Haasiophis/Grieco madness through the distance of doleful plod. Listen to an exclusive stream of Malsanctum below.

Of course, this isn’t to say Malsanctum is yet another one of those romantic funeral doom bands. There is no loving sentiment to Malsanctum, nor the colorful mystique of the human relationship. No, Malsanctum’s distrait echoism is a pure meditation on death and destruction. It is immediately made known that this is yet another creation by the person behind the new Canadian school of wanton, unembellished hatred, and Malsanctum is that hatred made imminent. This is music which hurts, sounds which embody all that is negative and wrong with the human condition made into an everlasting echo.

There is no love here, only a sickening loathing and abomination. Not that we would expect anything less from the great Haasiophis.

Malsanctum is out Friday the 13th on Iron Bonehead.
