Hate - "Numinosum" (Video Premiere)

hate

When I saw Polish extreme metal band Hate live in 2011 on the tour supporting their album Erebos, the band struck me as uncompromising, but also less-than engaging. Bands that don’t compromise can sometimes also not engage. To Hate’s credit that venue, Blondie’s, likewise does not compromise. It took a really stellar band to make that stage work (Accept killed there). I’m not sad that building has since been bulldozed.

Hate still does not compromise on their newest album Tremendum, but the band has become a little more engaging. A handful of clear notes introduce “Numinosum”, then reappear later as a refrain. The song takes almost a minute and a half to come to a boil. Hate are writing songs that cook listeners like lobsters, raising the heat in increments so that there’s no shocking loss of flavor, and they use this technique over and over on Tremendum to great effect. The second half of the song finds the band in full classic death metal mode, but it wouldn’t have the impact that it does without the subtlety of the introduction.

Vocalist and guitarist Adam “the First Sinner” Buszko has this to say about the video:

“I’m proud to present you the audio-visual fruit of our co-operation with 9Liter Production House. The picture was inspired by an archaic Slavic ritual that was practiced widely in the old says. Its purpose was to keep away evil spirits. Immerse in the ancient atmosphere and experience your own Numinosum as we unveil another piece of our new offering.”

Tremendum is out on May 5 via Napalm records. Order it here. Follow Hate on Facebook.
