Happy summer solstice!

Lori S., Acid King

. . .

I need to get to sleep, and I need to write this post. But I just mis-typed post as “pot” (my Freudian slip is showing), and I am too busy headbanging. Acid King are lighting me the FUCK UP.

Happy summer solstice, everyone in the northern hemisphere! This is my favorite day of the year. No soy un hijo de la oscuridad. Me encanta el sol. Today has the most of el sol. It’s all downhill from here.

My buddy Dave and I sometimes go hiking in the desert and mountains around Los Angeles. Once when we drove out on such a trip, Dave put on Acid King’s III, and it was one of those summer moments that adverts promise but never deliver, since the American dream died at the end of Easy Rider in ’69.

It all came together: sun, dust, wheels, horizon, and one hell of a buzz, loud.

On the boulevards of Los Angeles, that usually takes the form of 50 year-old money in a convertible. The top is down, and he’s blasting Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ’69”. Yes, that actually happens. This is LA, where clichés don’t dress their age. They cut you off on the road, they cut in line at the club, and worst of all, they breed.

Fuck that – my cliché is better. Give me astral stoner metal on the longest day of the year. Give me the voice of a solar goddess. One who rides bikes and writes riffs heavier than a buffet line in Texas. Give me the #1 band that needs to put out new music: Acid King.

I give you “Heavy Load”. Ostensibly the song is about trucking. But I think the song is about the heavy loads we all carry when we’ve “got nowhere else to go”. Well, we do have somewhere to go. We’ve got this music. It does not judge you. (Though some of its weakers adherents do.) It just is. When your sun is setting, you put it on for light.

And you put it on for motherfuckin’ HEAVY.
